Teachers To Run Against Legislators Who Defunded Their Schools

In Oklahoma, where austerity measures put in place in 2010  have devastated state infrastructure spending and forced teachers to strike to draw attention to inequity it has caused, nearly 100 teachers will run for office in November and offer voters the chance to place educators in charge of repairing an underfunded public school system.

After a tumultuous battle for recognition of the problem this spring — one that included teachers who had not received a raise in nearly a decade — over half of the Republican-controlled Oklahoma legislature still opposed the funding initiative. After the bipartisan bill passed, teachers warned they would “Remember in November” those politicians who had voted against what would be a 10 percent raise after years of salary neglect.
